Join the Momentum – in partnership with Rugby League Cares
Phoenix Dance Theatre was delighted to work in partnership with Rugby League Cares to deliver a mass participation event for 450 young people aged 9-21 years across the North of England. Working across 13 locations, including 10 Rugby League Foundations, we delivered 15 summer intensives July-August 2015 for the Join the Momentum programme. During this time participants worked with Phoenix Dance Theatre’s leading practitioners to learn mass dance material choreographed by Artistic Director Sharon Watson.
Try Then/Try Now choreographed by Sharon Watson is a celebration of 120 years of the Rugby League. Using extracts from live rugby league commentary spanning over a century, the piece was inspired by the highs and lows of the game – highlighting the teamwork and dedication of those both on and off the pitch.
On Saturday 29th August all 450 young people travelled down to London to perform Try Then/Try Now during half time at the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. This was an incredibly exciting opportunity for the young people – many of whom had never visited Wembley Stadium before. The project was also participant’s first experience of contemporary dance.
Mass participatory events such as this form an integral part of Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Access and Education work and exemplify our commitment to providing high-quality dance activity for all.
