Javier De Frutos: Paseillo

Created to mark Javier De Frutos’ first London season as Artistic Director of Phoenix, Paseillo was co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and is performed to the evocative sounds of Mozart’s Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento, K243.

Some of the loveliest, most joyous choreography (De Frutos) has produced The Independent on Sunday

Javier De Frutos: Los Picadores

Co-commissioned by La Biennale di Venezia, Los Picadores uses a remarkable recording of Stravinsky’s dramatic Les Noces (The Wedding). This iconic choral work for dance has been reimagined as a violent, carnal struggle between men and women - the high octane movement sharpened by top fight director, Terry King.

Stravinsky’s score has never sounded this intense The Guardian

Javier De Frutos: Nopalitos

We’re delighted to have De Frutos’s first commission for Phoenix return to the rep this Autumn. An eclectic collection of images inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead Festival accompanied by Jean-Marc Puissant’s stunning set and costume design and the wonderfully evocative tones of Lila Downs vocals make this brightly coloured production a must-see.

Excellent skills, infectious stamina and, above all, outstanding artistic consistency are the most distinctive features of the new Phoenix The Spectator

Javier De Frutos: New Work

Receiving its world premiere at Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield, this work is inspired by The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. De Frutos has a life-long passion for the work of the American playwright, fueled by 2 years exhaustive research into his work in the USA, made possible by an Arts Council fellowship in 2000. Javier is delighted to be sharing his passion with audiences in Yorkshire this year, and looks forward to touring the work further in 2008.

José Limón: Chaconne

A stunning solo choreographed by José Limón, a crucial figure in the development of modern dance. Chaconne (1942) has previously been performed outside Limón’s own company only once, by Mikhail Baryshnikov, widely acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest living dancers. Limón tried to capture the formal austerity and the profound quality of Bach’s music with this work which he originally choreographed to perform himself.
