Phoenix Dance Theatre Turn 34 today
11 Nov 2015
Phoenix Dance Theatre, the longest standing contemporary dance company outside of London, is proud to celebrate its 34 birthday today with a one-off performance at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre.
As part of an exciting mixed programme featuring works by Artistic Director Sharon Watson and New Adventures Choreographer Award-winner Caroline Finn, the Company is to present the world premiere re-staging of Itzik Galili’s Until.With/Out.Enough. Co-commissioned with the Royal Ballet this new version explores the concept of the enclosed space that exists within our minds and will premiere at the Royal Opera House before becoming part of the Company’s tour in the New Year
Phoenix Dance Theatre will also mark its 35 anniversary year throughout 2016, with a special celebratory tour of its Triple Bill 2016 which will feature alongside Itzik Galili’s piece, Kate Flatt’s brand new work Undivided Loves with either Caroline Finn’s Bloom or Sharon Watson’s Melt.
From small beginnings in 1981 the Company has grown to be a key Northern forerunner in contemporary dance and for over three and a half decades Phoenix Dance Theatre has performed, educated and inspired people across the globe.
Sharon Watson was appointed as the 7th Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in May 2009 and has since reaffirmed the Company’s core values through all of its activities whilst enriching and embodying the spirit of a multi-cultural Britain. Earlier this year Sharon was also appointed as independent chair of the steering committee, bidding for European Capital of Culture Leeds 2023 championing the pride of Leeds on the world stage.
