Weston Jerwood Creative Bursary – Graduate Dancer Position
10 Apr 2015
We are delighted to announce that Phoenix was one of forty organisations to be awarded Weston Jerwood Creative Bursary and the only one to create a dancer position.
The Graduate Dancer position is designed to enable dance graduates to gain the experience, confidence, maturity and skills that are required to work effectively and successfully within the professional contemporary dance world. It aims to bridge the gap between training and work. Participation in the activities of a professional company is a massive learning experience in itself. They will also have the support of an independent mentor to help the recipient of this position to gain a richer and deeper understanding of the professional ethos, the practice and the art form, and will provide them with the quality of guidance required for them to begin to reflect upon themselves as dance artists.
“This talent development initiative will identify gifted recent graduates who would otherwise not be in a financial position to work for free in order to get a foot on the competitive career ladder in the arts. With unpaid internships or work experience still a major barrier to securing the diversity and vibrancy of our future arts workforce, the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries programme will champion new voices. It will promote the potential for positive change through sharing evidence of best practice in recruitment and talent development.
