Choreographers and Composers Lab 2015

About

The Choreographers and Composers Lab 6 – 17 July 2015

Phoenix Dance Theatre was delighted to host a Choreographers and Composers Lab in July 2015; a two week intensive in our state of the art dance centre in Leeds.

Designed for professional choreographers and composers at an early stage of their career, this course offered a rare opportunity to focus on the creative process of research and experimentation with the emphasis on composition in music and dance. The project enabled participants to enhance future career prospects through experiencing collaborative approaches to creating work and developing partnership skills, in a safe, yet challenging environment without the pressure to produce final results.

The course was led by Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director & Choreographer Sharon Watson and Independent Music Director & Composer Ken Hesketh.

Phoenix Dance Theatre worked with four choreographers and four composers alongside with twelve professional dancers and four musicians over an intensive two-week period.

Two additional creative sandpits were delivered with the participants in October 2015 and February 2016. An evaluation of the project was conducted with participants, guest speakers and project leads giving their feedback. A copy of the evaluation report can be found here.

Following the lab Phoenix Dance Theatre commissioned Company Dancer Sandrine Monin and Composer Roberto David Rusconi to create a piece for the company. The resulting piece Calyx premiered at West Yorkshire Playhouse in February 2017.
