MindBody Conference 2015
Phoenix Dance Theatre and The Orchard Therapy Centre present: A Mindbody Conference
Saturday 3rd October 2015
Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, Leeds
Suffering; a turning point toward growth and creativity, a source of grievance, or simply too much to bear?
Phoenix Dance Theatre and The Orchard Therapy Centre, in collaboration with the Harry Guntrip Psychotherapy Trust, are delighted to host a unique multi-media conference that examines the relationship between the physical and the psychological – ‘mindbody’.
Through live performance, presentations, poetry and discussion, the day will explore the ways that our ‘mindbody’ mitigates, hosts and transforms suffering.
The conference will centre on a performance of Phoenix Dance Theatre’s ‘Document’ – a powerful, relentless and hard hitting dance, choreographed by exciting duo Ivgi & Greben. This brooding piece sees five dancers grappling with the darkest aspects of human emotion, with blistering, intense movement. The day will offer the audience a unique opportunity to engage in discussion with dancers and presenters as we explore the theme of suffering and its manifestation within our minds and bodies. The panel will draw out the themes of ‘personal power and personal ability’; ‘personal suffering and disability’ and examine how they are expressed within the ‘mindbody’.
Keynote speakers include: Mike Brearley – psychoanalyst and Chair of the Section for the Application of Psychoanalysis, presenting his paper Suffering; a turning point towards growth and creativity, a source of grievance, or simply too much to bear?; Michelle Scally Clarke – author and poet; Caroline Owens – Executive Director, Orchard Therapy Centre; Sharon Watson – Artistic Director, Phoenix Dance Theatre; Andrea White – Secretary, Harry Guntrip Trust will chair the discussion and present dancers and guest speakers.
