The Rite of Spring and Left Unseen
The Rite of Spring is in association with Opera North
Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is acknowledged as one of the great works of the 20th century and perhaps the most influential. The original ballet choreographed by Nijinsky led to riots at the theatre and the work still captivates audiences when performed today.
The vision of the world presented in the piece has multiple resonances in today’s global society conjuring thoughts of the crushing power of nature, the relentless growth of capitalism and technology and the inevitable fate of ‘the chosen’; the targeted, the sacrificial victim.
The Rite of Spring is presented as part of a double bill alongside Left Unseen choreographed by Amaury Lebrun.
Left Unseen explores inclusion and isolation and our instinctive reliance on the five senses. Using precise choreography, moments of unison, interaction, sporadic bursts of movement and sudden stillness Lebrun poses the question, how sensitive and aware can we become when we lose one of our senses…?
