Double Bill 2019- Contemporary Dance and Opera
The Rite of Spring and Gianni Schicchi
In association with Opera North
Stravinski’s The Rite of Spring is acknowledged as one of the great works of the 20th century and perhaps the most influential. The original ballet choreographed by Nijinski led to riots at the theatre and the work still captivates audiences when performed today.
This year, 105 years after the premiere, two giants of the Northern Arts scene – Phoenix Dance Theatre and Opera North – will work together for the first time to blend music and dance in a re-working of this seminal piece.
The vision of the world presented in the piece has multiple resonances in today’s global society conjuring thoughts of the crushing power of nature, the relentless growth of capitalism and technology and the inevitable fate of ‘the chosen’; the targeted, the sacrificial victim.
The Rite of Spring will a be performed as part of a Double Bill with Opera North’s Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini (1918). Inspired by an episode in Dante’s Inferno, Puccini’s short opera Gianni Schicchi is an irresistible satyr, set around the death-bed of a rich man.
This is a unique opportunity to see two Northern performance companies alongside one another showcasing the best in contemporary dance and opera.
