Phoenix Dance Theatre is the UK’s longest standing contemporary dance company outside London. Since the Company’s small beginnings in 1981, founded by three black British men, it has grown to be a key Northern forerunner in contemporary dance and for 37 years has performed across the globe educating and inspiring diverse audiences through dance.
As an award-winning repertory dance company with an outstanding reputation for artistic excellence, Phoenix Dance Theatre is now one of few mid-scale contemporary dance companies to employ a permanent company of professional dancers. Being a leading voice for contemporary dance in the UK, Phoenix Dance Theatre’s aim is to create dynamic, diverse and athletic work that embodies the spirit of a multicultural Britain. We collaborate with the most sought-after choreographers from across the globe, commissioning new and exciting work each year while developing new audiences for contemporary dance. Alongside our national and international tours, we are often commissioned to create standalone works for both public and private events.
Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Access & Education department delivers over 1000 workshops each year reaching up to 6,500 people with the aim to empower, engage and inspire through exceptional dance provision. Focused on three key strands: training the next generation of contemporary dancers, children and young people and the hard to reach, our Access & Education team are committed to changing lives through dance. Our provisions range from regular weekly classes as part of our Saturday School and Illuminate Dance programmes, prevocational training in the Youth Academies based in Leeds, Gateshead and York – to bespoke schools’ packages working on Cross-Curricular or performance led projects.
