A Very British Rhythm: Celebrating 250 Years of British Dance Heritage

A Very British Rhythm is a unique digital exhibition that celebrates the significant contributions of British people of colour to the UK’s Arts and Culture, particularly focusing on the rich history of dance over the past 250 years. This exhibition highlights the often-hidden legacies and remarkable achievements of British dancers and choreographers of Global Majority heritage.

The exhibition features the founders of Phoenix Dance Theatre David Hamilton MBE, Vilmore James and Donald Edwards.

In addition to our company’s founders, the exhibition also honors Dawn Holgate, Pam Johnson, Sharon Watson MBE, DL and Seline Derrick, the first female dancers who joined Phoenix Dance Theatre, marking the significant milestones in our history.

The dynamic energy and personal stories of the individuals are brought to life through the lens of photographer Hopeful Sandati. his portraits encapsulate the essence of the dancers’ movements and their captivating presence on stage.
