Honoring Sir Robert Cohan CBE

10 May 2024

On Friday 7 June Phoenix Dance Theatre’s company dancers and Northern School of Contemporary Dance students will present a revived performance of Sir Robert Cohan’s 1977 Forest as a tribute to the late influential dancer and choreographer whose legacy continues to shape contemporary dance.

In 2005, Phoenix were granted the privilege of staging Forest, to tie-in with celebrations of his 80th birthday. As co-founder of The Place and London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT), the company he directed for 20 years, Cohan’s influence on British dance is immense. Originally choreographed for LCDT in 1977, Forest is both a key milestone in the development of modern dance and a timeless classic.

In collaboration with the Sir Robert Cohan Dance Legacy, this event will honor Cohan’s profound impact on the dance world.

Phoenix Dance Theatre and Northern School of Contemporary Dance come together to commemorate the life of Sir Robert Cohan by performing Forest. Reworked, and adapted by Darshan Singh Bhuller. Before its premier in 1977, performed by London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Forest was first conceived in Yorkshire and is a fitting piece to bring back to the roots of where it started.”- Matthew Topliss, Head of Artistic Management
