Green Week at Phoenix ๐ŸŒ

16 Jan 2025

As part of our continued commitment to the environment, Phoenix Dance Theatre continues to take proactive steps to strengthen sustainability efforts and address global environmental challenges.

Sustainability at Phoenix

Our company is committed to sustainability through a variety of practices that promote ecological, human, and economic well-being. By integrating sustainable approaches across all aspects of our operations, we prioritse long-term impact. From our annual national and international tours to making more mindful choices in our costume department, sustainability remains a the core of our decision-making

This January sees us host our Green Week, a special initiative designed to raise awareness around sustainability practices across our building and highlight how even small changes can have a significant impact.

About Green Week

Considering the annual day of World Earth Day each April. Green Week encourages sustainable practices by offering practical ways to reduce waste between 15 – 16 January, the two-day event will include a clothes and gift swap, an old makeup collection focused on hard-to-recycle beauty and wellness products, and a vegetarian and vegan team potluck to highlight the benefits of adopting a more sustainable diet.

Our Commitment and Approachย

We spoke with Operations Assistant Niamh Bell, who has been leading environmental discussions across Phoenix Dance Theatre and collaborating with our building partners Northern Ballet to implement greener choices into the everyday running of our Quarry Hill base.

The Environmental team at Phoenix have been working behind-the-scenes to improve our processes across operations and productions using the Theatre Green Book as guidance. As of last week, we are pleased to announce we have hit Basic Standard in Operations!

We’re excited to be working closely with Comms this year to share the progress being made specifically in touring and productions, but also to encourage sustainable working across all departments to put our environmental goals at the forefront of everything we do.

Tackling the climate crisis can be scary, especially given recent extreme weather events, but this only emphasies the importance of taking imminent action. At Phoenix, we’re keen to make our messaging encouraging and approachable, and look forward to sharing more about our collective environmental responsibilities with you – our staff, visitors and audiences.ย

As part of our ongoing mission, our Green Blog series will explore every facet of our company, sparking important conversations about environmental and climate action within the arts. Stay tuned for more!
