Phoenix Dance Theatre announce that composer, creative director and cultural activist Shirley J. Thompson will be the Music Director for their Choreographers and Composers Lab taking place in July 2019.
Composers, Musicians, Choreographers and Dancers are invited to apply for the two-week intensive led by choreographer and Artistic Director Sharon Watson and composer Shirley J. Thompson – providing the opportunity for the next generation of artists to work collaboratively, innovate, and develop new ways of working in music and dance.
“I am delighted to contribute to Phoenix Dance Theatre’s 2019 Choreographers and Composers Lab. I have benefitted greatly from comparable opportunities and know that the experience of the participants will be transformative, as it was for me”, Says Shirley J. Thompson. “This is a very important event in the company’s calendar and initiatives such as these fuse artistic collaborations and ignite unfathomable possibilities.”
The Choreographers and Composers Lab will bring together four choreographers and four composers at a pivotal point in their careers, to participate in an immersive two-week programme. The participating artists will work with 12 professional dancers and four musicians, who will bring their artistic explorations to life, as well as have guest lectures and workshops with industry professionals while being mentored by Watson and Thompson.
Sharon Watson, Artistic Director. “We are thrilled to have Shirley on board with us for our second Choreographers and Composers Lab. Her vast experience working in dance, orchestral music, opera, film, television, and her cross artform collaborations makes her the perfect candidate to support me in mentoring the participants of the 2019 CC Lab.”
The two–week intensive Choreographers and Composers Lab will run in July 2019 at Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Leeds studios and surrounding locations.
Week one: Tuesday 2 July – Saturday 6 July 2019
Week two: Tuesday 9 July – Saturday 13 July 2019
Two follow up creative sandpits for the choreographers and composers only, will be held in Autumn 2019 and February 2020. Exact dates to be announced.
