Phoenix Dance Theatre wins at inaugural Black British Theatre Awards
28 Oct 2019
We are delighted to have won the awards for Best Dance Production and Best Dance Performance in a Production at the inaugural, Black British Theatre Awards.
The ceremony which took place at The Old Finsbury Town Hall recognised the Company for their acclaimed reworking of The Rite of Spring, and ex-company dancer Prentice Whitlow for his performance in the same work. The Rite of Spring premiered at Leeds Grand in February 2019 alongside Opera North’s Gianni Schicchi and since has received rave reviews and formed part of a double bill of contemporary dance which has toured to venues throughout the UK.
Sharon Watson, Phoenix’s Artistic Director attended the ceremony and said “what an incredible day. To be able to celebrate Black British creatives for their immense contribution to the cultural sector is fantastic. I hope by celebrating black artists in this way we inspire a generation who may not see people like them represented in mainstream media.”
Phoenix Dance Theatre was amongst 23 other recipients on the night including Beverley Knight and Layton Williams.
