Remembering Alford Gardner

7 Oct 2024

We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Alford Gardner.

A pioneer for community relations in Leeds and the wider Black British community, Alford was one of the last surviving Windrush passengers. His remarkable journey included serving in the RAF as a motoring mechanic while stationed at Filey, North Yorkshire during World War Two and later settling in Leeds, where he founded Britain’s first Caribbean Cricket Club. His dedication to preserving British Caribbean history is a legacy we cherish here at Phoenix.

Mr. Gardner worked closely with former Artistic Director Sharon Watson on the 2018 production of ‘Windrush: Movement of The People’. His invaluable knowledge and contribution to the creative process will always be remembered.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, all who knew and supported him.
