Born and raised in North Wales, Lay (any pronouns) began dancing at the local studio at the age of 3, exploring numerous styles before deciding to focus on ballet, aged 10. Lay trained at C R Dance Academy in Llandudno, and then with National Youth Dance Wales.

They were then accepted onto Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s CertHE Contemporary Dance course, before completing their BA (Hons) Dance (Contemporary) degree with First Class Honours. Throughout their training, they have trained with many artists and choreographers, who have all helped shape them into the dancer they are today, such as Marcus Jarrell Willis, Akram Khan Company, Osian Meilir, Yukiko Masui, Alethia Antonia, Marcat Dance, Arielle Smith, and more.
