Podcast series
In celebration of our 40th anniversary in 2021, we launched a podcast series to honour our legacy and the vibrant heritage our founders established here in Leeds.
The series features engaging conversations with notable guests, including co-founder David Hamilton and former Artistic Director Darshan Singh Bhuller, alongside local Leeds artists. These discussions resonate deeply with the current landscape, reflecting themes that continue to shape our artistic journey and community.
Episode 1. 40 Years of Phoenix with David Hamilton & Dane Hurst (Nov 2021)
In this episode, David Hamilton, founder of Phoenix Dance Theatre and former Artistic Director Dane Hurst (2021 – 2022) reflect upon the company beginnings and future plans. In particular, they discuss key relationships with educators in the city during the formative years of Phoenix in the 1980’s.
Episode 2. Darshan Singh Bhuller in conversation with Dr Laura Griffiths (July 2021)
The identity of Phoenix as a multicultural, repertoire company since Singh-Bhuller’s artistic leadership in the early 2000s. Some reflections upon working with the company in 2021 on revival performances.

In this episode, current and former company dancers discuss and reflect upon their experience of coming through a pandemic period and looking back at 40 years through the anniversary repertoire that they performed in.

In this podcast, the group explain what the heritage arm of Phoenix is and reflect upon highlights of their experiences and relationships within the company. The group discuss the impact that their time with Phoenix has had upon their careers and ongoing relationships with the company spanning forty year period. The group represents mutliple time periods of Phoenix, beginning in the 1980s through to 2000s and present day.

In this episode, Khadijah Ibrahim hosts a conversation with key contributors to Leeds’ artistic heritage and identity who share their memories of Phoenix Dance Theatre. The group reflect upon the emergence of Phoenix and how this intersects with their individual relationships to creative practice and the cultural landscape of Leeds.
