Community Engagement Tour 2024

9 - 27 November 2024

We’re thrilled to announce the return of our annual Community Engagement Tour

Phoenix is incredibly proud of its roots and being born in Leeds. Whilst we are known for touring nationally and internationally, it is important for us to retain our position as one of the key cultural organisations right here in Leeds. We believe that great art should be accessible to everyone because it changes lives, and that great art is created through diversity – diversity of our company and staff, our programming AND our audiences.

Dance should be for everyone, and we are committed to ensuring that we are providing opportunities for our local community to engage with and experience what we do. That is why we are bringing Phoenix performances and engagement opportunities into the community.

This November, our Community Tour will include extracts of three diverse dance works, including Matter of Fact by Marcus Jarrell WillisGYOCO 99 by Iolanda Portogallo, and a sneak preview of our brand-new narrative work Inside Giovanni’s Room.

We’re excited to return to Thackray Museum of Medicine to perform on Saturday 9 November, 12 & 2pm. This year will also see the addition of public pop-up performances in Trinity Leeds on Saturday 16 November, 12 & 1pm.

Alongside our public performances, we’re looking forward to continuing to build relationships with schools in the city of Leeds, including Trinity Academy, Harehills Primary School, Aldertree Primary School and Co-op Brierley School. Our company dancers will deliver bespoke lecture demonstrations including a special excerpt performance to give students an up-close introduction to contemporary dance. Students will then take part in an immersive workshop based on what they’ve experienced to offer a deeper insight into the work.

Each event will be tailored to the specific venue space and audience, many of whom will never have had access to contemporary dance before. Audiences and participants will be introduced to our artform and to Phoenix Dance Theatre, and each event will include a performance element of current, and in some venues new work performed by our company dancers.

We hope you can join us for our public pop-up performances!
