Inside Giovanni’s Room – That’s a wrap! Spring 2025
16 Jun 2025

After successfully selling out shows in two cities and receiving rave reviews across Leeds, Dundee, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, and London, this year’s spring tour of Inside Giovanni’s Room has drawn its final curtain.
We’d like to thank everyone who joined us across our Spring tour this year. We truly appreciate our audience’s continuous support as we continue to push boundaries through our work. As a company, we take great pride in the cast and creative team behind Inside Giovanni’s Room for their hard work and dedication. We also want to extend our gratitude to all of our supporters, both old and new.
Homage to James Baldwin
Honouring the late author James Baldwin in his centenary year, Inside Giovanni’s Room paid homage to one of the 20th century’s most iconic novels, Giovanni’s Room. With themes still poignant and relevant to today’s society, the full-length narrative production has become a pivotal moment for us as a renowned dance company as we bring the novel to the stage.
The narrative delves into themes of love, sexuality, guilt, and self-acceptance, bringing together a diverse audience through a story that bridges the past and present. Viewed through the perspective of the main character, David, the story unfolds in 1950s Paris as he navigates his sexuality. The production, conveniently scheduled to run from spring until June in London and coinciding with LGBTQ+ month, has successfully attracted a varied audience, making it accessible to everyone.
★★★★★- “Inside Giovanni’s Room is more than a performance; it’s a powerful meditation on identity, shame, and the universal desire to be seen and loved. A triumph in every sense.” – The Spy in the Stalls
“Throughout the entire performance, each creative aspect worked seamlessly as a unit with others; nothing appeared to be an afterthought… Phoenix Dance Theatre has proved once again the limitless boundaries of dance performance and will surely inspire audiences with this innovative adaptation.” – Leeds Living
Education
Inside Giovanni’s Room not only graced multiple stages but also established a framework for workshops at various dance schools nationwide, offering young aspiring dancers the chance to collaborate with the company and master the techniques showcased on stage. Additionally, we were delighted to welcome community groups from across the UK to watch the performance, including our Phoenix Youth Academy cohorts in Leeds and Newcastle, helping to bridge the gap for young dancers and showcasing the potential pathways available after their training.
As this year’s chapter for our Spring tour closes, rest assured, this might not be the last you’ve heard of Giovanni and his room…
