Spotlight on… ‘Requiem: Journeys of the Soul’

Our 2023 World Premiere production Requiem: Journeys of the Soul with fellow Leeds-based Opera North saw two nations unite as we collaborated with South African partner companies Jazzart Dance Theatre and Cape Town Opera to deliver an extraordinary, 5 star cross-cultural performance at Leeds Grand Theatre from 26 May – 4 June 2023.

Our dancers then had the incredible opportunity to travel to South Africa where the double-bill was remounted at Artscape Theatre, Cape Town, South Africa from 12 – 14 October 2023 as part of Jazzart Dance Theatre’s 50th Anniversary Celebratory Festival performing alongside Cape Town Opera and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

Our blog series, Requiem – The Journey, explores the inspiration behind the choreography, shining a light on the production’s deeply rooted South African connections and cultural influences. It also gives us a unique insight into the creative process from the artists involved by delving deeper into what it is like to be a part of this astounding production both at home and internationally.
